Friday Links (hot dancing cops edition)

IMG_3781It’s Friday! Although for some of us, yesterday was “virtual friday” since my office is closed today so I have a holiday. My husband doesn’t get the holiday until Monday. So I’m taking a vacation day Monday. Because the Founding Fathers would have wanted me to have a four-day weekend, right?

For those of you who are reading this in the U.S., happy Independence Day! If you’re in the UK you’d probably not like to talk about it any further. Everyone else: Happy Friday!

Anyway, here is a collection of some of the things that I ran across over the course of the week which struck me as worthy of being shared. Sorted into categories with headings so you can skip more easily:

About fontfolly

I've loved reading for as long as I can remember. I write fantasy, science fiction, mystery, and nonfiction. For more than 20 years I edited and published an anthropomorphic sci-fi/space opera literary fanzine. I attend and work on the staff for several anthropormorphics, anime, and science fiction conventions. I live near Seattle with my wonderful husband, still completely amazed that he puts up with me at all.

The article, “The Real Reason Why Conservatives Like Ross Douthat Oppose The Gay Marriage Ruling,” was fascinating to me. I’ve seen studies (that I’m too lazy to properly find and cite at the moment, sorry) that find men tend to be happier when married and women unhappier. Anecdotally, I’ve seen many incidents of divorces in which the men promptly seek new (often younger and naive) replacement-wives while the women celebrate being able to prioritize themselves for the first time in years or decades. And so many wives express the wish to have a wife of their own, not another husband, and not because they are bisexual, but because they want some flipping help around the house for a change.

If same-sex marriages inspire balancing the roles of husbands and wives, then that is one more reason for many opposite-sex couples to celebrate the SCOTUS decision. Better balance might make opposite-sex couples happier, thus keeping them together longer… and saving such “traditional” marriages.

Somewhere in my giant list of unfinished draft blog posts is one that begins with an anecdote of one of the times some one asked me “which is the woman?” And talk about the many things wrong with that question.

The assumptions that most people going into the lifelong commitment that is marriage are just scary…
