The weather has been a bit milder this week. Unfortunately, I, my husband, and a bunch of my co-workers have been experiencing symptoms of some sort of cold-like thing. No fun. OTOH, my adventures with trying to squirrel-proof my bird feeder since the squirrel I named Crazy Ivan last fall is no longer content to forage through the spillage under the feeder have been interesting.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of interest to queer folks, the top two stories of the week, five stories about homophobes and hater, five stories about bad religion, five stories about the impeachable one, and five videos (plus things I wrote).
This Week in News for Queers and Allies:
Dads Offer Hundreds Of Free Hugs At Pride Parade For Kids Whose Parents Rejected Them.
How to spot Real vs. Fake corporate support for the LGBTQIA+ community.
NEW YORK: Lawmakers Ban Gay/Trans Panic Defense.
Pride Comes to White Center – The neighborhood’s first-ever queer festival was a big gay success.
Stories of the Week:
Thousands petition Netflix to cancel Amazon Prime’s Good Omens – US Christian group condemns Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s story as ‘making satanism appear normal’ – but petition wrong company. Besides petitioning the wrong company, the series is already at an end, Neil has said there will be no sequel (he adapted the novel and made the show because of the dying request of his co-author, remember?)
Scotland’s crannogs are older than Stonehenge.
Japanese fishing trawler sunk by giant jellyfish.
Alabama man denies feeding meth to ‘attack squirrel’.
George Jedenoff: A 101-year-old TidBITS Reader.
This Week in Homophobes and Other Haters:
FBI investigating more vandalism at Renton LGBTQ-friendly church.
Missouri man arrested after threatening to ‘kill every gay person’ at pride parade has been charged.
More than 70 Philadelphia police officers on desk duty over racist, violent Facebook posts.
This Week in Bad Religion:
Defending a Lie With More Lies Has Become Essential Doctrine.
Throughline’ Traces Evangelicals’ History On The Abortion Issue. As I’ve said many times, I’m old enough to remember when evangelical Christians were pro-choice, and claimed that the Catholic Church’s anti-abortion stand was anti-Biblical.
‘Children are being hurt’: Rally calls on Southern Baptists to do more to prevent sexual abuse.
Parents Are Pulling Their Kids from a Christian Camp That Fired a Gay Counselo.
Religious Right Leaders Join Trump Re-election Rally, Warn Defeat Would be Win for ‘Spiritual Enemy’.
This Week in Impeach the Mo-Fo Already:
Billionaire Tom Steyer airing impeachment ad on ‘Fox & Friends’ .
Trump and the Rhetoric of Fascism. This op-ed tries to make the case that Trump isn’t actually a fascist, but the contradictions in his argument are… laughable.
Things I wrote:
Weekend Update 6/15/19: He didn’t stutter, they just don’t care.
Don’t let the revenuers rain on your parade, or lessons learned from my great-grandfather.
Sunday Funnies, part 36: Kyle’s B&B.
Colorful, dramatic, and large-scale: riffing on several sf/f topics.
