We have reached the second Friday in June, aka Pride Month.

I haven’t written as much about Pride so far as I meant to. Part of this the that so very much is going on in the world, and I feel a bit like a broken record pointed out that the Stonewall Riots were also a protest against police brutality and the leaders of that first rebellion were people of color and trans or gender nonconforming… but I do need to write some more and I will.

Meanwhile, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to queers and our allies, five stories about the pandemic, five stories about science fiction, five stories about police misconduct and related injustice, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things I wrote).

We have reached the first Friday in June, aka Pride Month.

I’ve posted numerous times recently reminding folks that the first Pride was a riot, and specifically a riot about police brutality, and specifically a riot instigated by black and latinx queer people, and therefore no white gay people have a moral or ethical leg to stand on opposing the current protests and should all join wholeheartedly in the Black Lives Matter demonstrations. If you know any white cis gay men who aren’t supporting the resistance, shame them and if that doesn’t work, shun them. Because they don’t belong in any community other than the Nazis…

According to one of the priests present, the Reverend Gini Gerbasi, said, “We were literally DRIVEN OFF of the St. John's, Lafayette Square patio with tear gas and concussion grenades and police in full riot gear,” Gerbasi said. “We were pushed back 20 feet, and then eventually - with SO MANY concussion grenades - back to K street.”

Stories of the Week:

The libertarian right is not now and never has been opposed to the government using violence against its own people in general and the only people under any illusion about that are gun-owning American libertarians. I would have just left out the qualification of “right” — I’ve only met two kinds of libertarians: full on neo-Nazis who cloud their rhetoric under multiple layers of misdirection on order to recruit, and neo-Nazi sympathzers who are in deep denial and fool themselves more than they fool anyone else.

We have reached the final Friday in May.

Most of the week has been a mix of drizzly evening, cool days, some sun breaks, slowly warming as the week went on. Then Thursday the weather decided to pretend it was summer. So it was sunny, too warm, and the darn pollen count was through the roof… and I had one of four remaining impossible deadlines of the week to try to get out while suffering a major sinus headache and other symptoms of a bad hay fever day.

Friday Five (vice president disease vector edition)

It’s Friday! The first Friday in May.

Remembering what day it is shouldn’t be as difficult as it has become. Even though I check my calendar every morning, and if it’s work day review meetings and deadlines, it still feel like all the days are blended together.

Meanwhile, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to queers and our allies, five stories about the pandemic, five stories about deplorable people, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things I wrote).

A few problems with this: the creator of the Bi Pride flag back in 1998 officially put the trademark in the public domain. You can’t copyright a color combination. There is no record of a copyright. One of the articles you find if you search in Google for the guy who created the flag is one published by this group several years ago where he explains about putting it in the public domain…

Friday Five (typhoid mary-onettes edition)

Typhoid Mary-onettes
Cartoon by Steve Sack, Star Tribune.
It’s already the fourth Friday in April!

It has started raining again, and the pollen count has gone down a bit. So I am a bit less miserable and the last couple of days haven’t been quite so anxiously playing the “are my symptoms extreme hay fever or have I finally caught the COVID-19 virus” game? Which, may I say, might qualify as the worst game in the history of games!

Friday Five (not one kind word edition)

It’s the third Friday in April.

My hay fever symptoms have been bad all week. This causes the daily panic of my reminding myself that I’m checking my temperature regularly and checking my symptoms against the list from the CDC. It so happened that also this week I was rubbing oil into the wooden veranda furniture as I do every spring and winter to keep the wood safe from the elements. So during my lunch break today I carefully rubbed off all the excess oil from the previous couple of days of work with a dry cloth. Then in the evening I went out to turn on the grill for our first grilled dinner of the year, and I noticed the wooden table looked odd. Between noon and five so much pollen had gathered on the table, I could write in it with my finger. No wonder I had the worst sinus headache in months Thursday!
