All the usual busy-ness at work, but I’ve got a three-day weekend and will be visiting family, so that’s a good thing.
So, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to the queer community, five stories about haters and their ilk, five stories the impeachable one, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).
This has not been exactly a happy week for world news. Seriously, one of the least awful things to happen this week was the stock market taking a dive as the pointless trade war rattled the economy further.
So this week’s Friday Five wasn’t exactly fun to assemble. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to the queer community, five stories about science fact and fiction, five stories about haters and their guns, five stories about the deplorables, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).
It’s been a busy work week and I have an insane deadline. Meanwhile, my personal laptop is being repaired so I’m working it a slightly older machine borrowed from my husband.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to the queer community, five stories about deplorable people, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).
Author of bestselling Christian book apologizes to LGBTQ community. I’m glad this guy has done this, after getting his publisher to agree not to print new copies of his books, and I’m glad he’s getting out of the grip of the fundamentalist evangelical church he was raised in.

While many parts of the world were experiencing record-breaking heat, we were having daytime highs in the 70s. Work continues to be crazy. The pollen count remains high. And I spent way more time reading than writing this week.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories of interest to the queer community, five stories about the impeachable one, five stories about haters and their ilk, five stories about the lack of exoneration, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).

It’s been a weird week. Started out trying to convince myself that it was just hay fever. Instead, I’ve been unwell all week.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories about sf/f and science, five stories about haters and their ilk, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).
John Paul Stevens Leaves Legacy of LGBTQ Rights Advocacy. “It borders on the absurd to assume that the word ‘liberty’ does not include one’s right to choose a spouse, but does include a right to possess a firearm in one’s home.”
‘Batman’ DVD Robin storyboard sequence – The sequence introducing the Boy Wonder – ultimately cut before filming began – was taken from an early draft of the 1989 ‘Batman’ movie, put together using original pre-production storyboards and voiced by B:TAS’s Kevin Conroy (Batman) and Mark Hamill (the Joker):
The weather has been interesting. Overnight lows that seem more in keeping with April or May. The daytime highs are at least above 70, but so much of every day is overcast, that it looks like it should be colder than it is.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top two stories of the week, five stories about sf/f and science, five stories about haters and their crimes, five stories about why someone should be impeached, and five videos (plus things I wrote and notable obituaries).
Own the decision (click to embiggen)It’s the first Friday in July, the day after a big holiday here in the U.S. and I’ve been a slacker at blogging all week.
Last weekend we attended Locus Awards Weekeend plus watched part of the Seattle Pride parade and spent a couple hours are the Pride Festival. I used vacation time to make it a four day weekend so I would have Monday as a cool-down/unpack/do laundry/etc day. Then had two days at the office, most of which were filled with me fixing things people didn’t know how to do or didn’t have permissions for during the two days I was gone (which happened to coincide with a release date). And now, between the holiday and another vacation day, I’m in the middle of another four-day weekend.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top two stories of the week, five stories about sf/f and science, five stories about deplorable people, and five videos (plus things I wrote).
Pregnancy and Biology 101. “I originally titled this “Pregnancy 101 for Guys,” but given the state of sex education in the U.S., I suspect many of us need some additional learning regardless of gender. But I’m mostly looking at my fellow guys with this thing, especially with all of the recent debate and discussion. Some of this is information I wish I’d learned sooner. Hopefully it will be helpful to others.”
I will try to get my Pride Parade/Festival post finished and uploaded before Thursday. In the mean time, several conversations in my social media streams made me think that it is time to clear out some of the images I’ve been saving in hopes of using to illustrate a post.
We have reached the point where the same people who inspired someone to go on a mass shooting spree in a synagogue, inspired someone else to drive his car into a crowd of people protesting a neo-Nazi rally (killing one woman and injuring a bunch of other people), and are cheering children being forcibly separated from their families and locked in cages… those same people are outraged beyond belief that someone threw a milkshake at one of them!
And then they are angry that some of us don’t see the injustice of the milkshake. So, just in case it isn’t perfectly clear where my moral compass is aligned, please enjoy these images:
“We should not punch Nazis is… is something I saw tweeted by the guy who punched me in the face for no reason in high school. Being a Nazi, that’s FREE SPEECH. No reason… well that’s not protected by the Constitution at al!” “—Jeremy Kaplowitz
It’s the final Friday of Pride Month, and my husband and I are going on a small vacation.
It’s once again time for Locus Awards Weekend, a small sci-fi event we’ve been going to for a few years that is on the same weekend as Pride and whose hotel is conveniently really close to the end of the parade route and the location of the festival. So, Happy Pride!
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of interest to queer folks, the top two stories of the week, and five videos (plus things I wrote).
Franklin Graham is wrong — real Christians aren’t offended by the pride flag. Also, on a personal note, I want to point out that my Great-grandmother, who is mentioned in my recent Father’s Day post, was a United Church of Christ member. Represent! (click to embiggen)It’s the third Friday of Pride Month, and rainbows are bursting out all over.
The weather has been a bit milder this week. Unfortunately, I, my husband, and a bunch of my co-workers have been experiencing symptoms of some sort of cold-like thing. No fun. OTOH, my adventures with trying to squirrel-proof my bird feeder since the squirrel I named Crazy Ivan last fall is no longer content to forage through the spillage under the feeder have been interesting.
Anyway, welcome to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of interest to queer folks, the top two stories of the week, five stories about homophobes and hater, five stories about bad religion, five stories about the impeachable one, and five videos (plus things I wrote).
Trump and the Rhetoric of Fascism. This op-ed tries to make the case that Trump isn’t actually a fascist, but the contradictions in his argument are… laughable.
For the first time ever, after four decades buried deep in the vaults, a previously unreleased version of ‘Time’, recorded in 1986 by Freddie Mercury for the concept album of the hit musical:
