Friday Five (daily double edition)

New York Times front page…
We have reached the second Friday in November. Half of my brain says that surely that can’t be right because it is obciously many, many, many months past that date–while the other half of my brain keeps hoping that it is much earlier in the year.

I wish I had some words of wisdom, but most days I feel as if I am barely hanging on to any semblance of reality by by fingernails. The fragileness of it all ought to have been alleviated by Trump being trounced in the election, but the evil narcissist is still officially president for nearly 70 more days, so no, it hasn’t.

So let’s get to the Friday Five. This week I an breaking a few rules. But since the rules I am breaking don’t imperil the republic, I dont feel guilty about them. So, the week I bring you: the top five stories that have nothing to do with either presidential campaign of the week, five stories of interest to queers and our allies, five stories about the pandemic, five stories about the possible future of our fragile republic, five stories about the evil forces trying to destroy our republic, five stories about the sore loser, five stories about haters and other deplorables, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things I wrote).

This Week in the Pandemic:

Everything you need to know about the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine. “Many vaccines which require cold storage need to be kept at around 4°C or lower but it has been suggested that the Pfizer vaccine needs to be stored at -70°C. This could pose problems for transport and storage of the vaccine.” That is a really big logistical nightmare that very few are talking about… How will a COVID vaccine be distributed once it’s approved by FDA?

Coronavirus cases are skyrocketing. Here’s what it will take to gain control – Experts continue to emphasize the importance of masks, social distancing and other public health measures.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – I Lost On Jeopardy (Official Video)
This video needs some context. Weird Al wrote this parody just a bit over a year before the first episode of the rebooted Jeopardy hosted by Alex Trebek was recored. The set shown in this music video is based on the way Jeopardy looked during its initial run during the ’60s and ’70s. Art Fleming, who was the host for it’s entire first run until 1979 appears in the video. Don Pardoe, who was the announcer on this and dozens of other NBC show during the 50s, 60s, and 70s has a vocal appearance. Those you not old enough to remember to old version of Jeopardy by recognize Pardo as the man who was the announcer for more than 25 seasons of Saturday Night Live. This Weird Al song is a parody of the pop song “(Our Love’s in) Jeopardy” recorded by the the Greg Kihn band and reached the Top Ten in 1983. Greg Kihn makes a cameo at the very end in an appearance that evokes the official music video of his band’s song. While technically this Weird Al song has nothing to do with the Trebek Era of Jeopardy I still think it is a tribute to the deep cultural impact the show has had on us all:

Friday Five (farewell Mr Bond edition)

Now that’s what a Double-oh agent should look like!
We have reached the first Friday in November.

It’s been a really tough four years, and this week has not been the spectacular knock out many were hoping for, but we’re nearly at the end of the beginning, I’m quite sure. Because everyone is suffering from outrage fatigue and anxiety exhaustion and existential debility, I think we need a break. So I have organized this week’s Friday Five to minimize the angst. Yes, politics is mentioned, but more headlines about the good things that you probably missed because all of the oxygen has been sucked up by the liar in chief.

So let’s get to the Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories that have nothing to do with either presidential campaign of the week, five stories related to the election but again only cool things, five stories of mostly uplifting interest to queer people and our allies, five stories about science and science fiction, five stories about the tops of the tickets, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things I wrote).

Friday Five (time for an exorcism edition)

You can't have it both ways...We have reached the fifth and final Friday of October.

Usually I would be loading this post with lots of Halloween links, but there’s just too much serious, frightening, and potentially deadly stuff going on in the world (don’t worry, Halloween does appear a few times!). I’m not just talking about the ongoing problem of people testing positive for COCID at my husband’s workplace (his first test came back negative; keep your fingers crossed for us, if you will).

So, let’s jump to this week’s Friday Five. This week I bring you: one story that deserved its own topic, the top five stories of the week, five stories about haters and deplorables, five stories about the moronic thug occupying the Oval Office, five stories about those trying to suppress the vote and those fighting the suppression, five topical videos, and five music videos (plus some things I wrote).

Friday Five-Oh (plus ten edition)

“I'm not old, I'm FUCKING retro!”Welcome to the fourth Friday in September. September, the month when superior people are born, and this day in September is the on which extra-special awesome people are born.

I’m just a little bit prejudiced in that evaluation. Today’s blog post has a slightly odd title because today is my birthday. And it’s one of those big ones evenly divisible by ten. I am now officially a member to two different groups within the population considered at high risk in the pandemic. Yesterday I was in only one. I usually make a post on my birthday that ends with some words of wisdom. I decided I don’t need to do a separate post today, so you get the words of wisdom here: Taking care of yourself is being productive.

And now it is time for me to roll out this week’s Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories about deplorables, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things I wrote).

Stories of the Week:

The Village People Will Sue You for Saying ‘YMCA’ Is About Gay Sex.

The air quality index has remained in either the Unhealthy for Everyone or Very Unhealthy range all week. I only started getting partial night’s sleep when my doctor confirmed that the inhaler I have incase I get a case of bronchitis can be used for this. I’m coughing slightly less now that I’m using the inhaler four times a day. I really hope the rain comes and cleans us out soon!

Friday Five (how will you vote edition)

And here were are at the first Friday in September. September, the month when superior people are born.

We had a relatively cool week, though temps have been edging up into the range where I start to melt, and the long term forecast says we might be up in those insane temperatures late next week. Which is really weird, because September almost never gets that warm here. Speaking, my quest to find a replacement to local weather blog since my former favorite has, over the course of the last couple years: become a climate change denialist apologist, claimed that quarantines and other measures weren’t necessary to stop the pandemic, starting supporting Blue Lives Matter, and finally compared the Black Lives Matter protestors to Nazi Brownshirts. Fortunately a local nonprofit news blog noticed all of us searching and came out with a list of suggestions (only one of which I’d found before). So, yay!

It’s time for me to roll out this week’s Friday Five. This week I bring you: the top five stories of the week, five stories about science and sci fi, five stories of interest to queers and our allies, five stories about good things, five stories about the pussy grabber in chief and his enablers, and five videos (plus notable obituaries and some things that I wrote).
